At Mohill · Mohill, Co. Leitrim
The Connacht Fleadh is one of the most important events in the traditional Irish music calendar - a full week of competition, session playing, concerts, and cultural life that draws musicians, singers, and dancers from across the province. In 2026 it returns to Mohill for the first time since 2010, and the town has deep roots in this kind of gathering: Mohill hosted its first county Fleadh back in 1965 and the Connacht Fleadh the following year. For anyone with an ear for traditional music, or who simply wants to be somewhere that feels genuinely alive with Irish culture, the week of 28 June to 5 July is worth marking out.
The week runs from Sunday 28 June through to Sunday 5 July, with the competitive programme concentrated at the end: dancing competitions on Friday 3 July, and all other competitions - instrument, song, and ensemble categories - across Saturday and Sunday. The competitions are the serious business of the Fleadh, where musicians and singers from across Connacht compete to qualify for Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann, the All-Ireland, held later in the summer. Winning here is a real achievement.
Away from the competitions, the streets and pubs of Mohill fill with informal sessions throughout the week. This is where the Fleadh has its own particular character - musicians meeting, tuning up in corners, tunes spilling out of open doors at all hours. Workshops and concerts typically run alongside the competitive schedule, giving visitors who do not compete plenty to follow. The event is organised under the banner of Ceol Alainn CCÉ (Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the body that runs traditional music competitions nationally).
Mohill sits in the centre-east of County Leitrim, roughly 16 km south of Carrick-on-Shannon on the N4 corridor. By car from Dublin the drive is around two hours via the N3 or N4; from Galway it is just over an hour. Carrick-on-Shannon is the nearest town with reliable Bus Éireann and Expressway connections, and local taxis cover the short hop to Mohill during festival week. Street parking in the town is free and plentiful on a normal day, though Fleadh week will be busy - arriving early or using any overflow areas signposted by the organisers is the sensible approach.
Mohill is a market town with a strong community feel and a string of pubs that serve as the informal backbone of the Fleadh. The surrounding county offers lakelands, the Shannon-Erne Waterway, and some of the quieter countryside in Ireland’s north midlands. There is more to see in Mohill and across Co. Leitrim.
