At Adventure Gently · Boat Quay House, Dromahair, Co. Leitrim, F91 YR97
Leitrim Sports Partnership runs a three-session Canadian canoeing course on the River Bonet at Adventure Gently in Dromahair, aimed at adults and teenagers who want to learn to paddle. The course runs across three dates, Tuesday 4 August, Tuesday 11 August and Sunday 23 August 2026, with all canoes, buoyancy aids and equipment supplied. It is a beginner-friendly programme rather than a one-off event, run by the county’s public sports body rather than a private operator.
Sessions run for an hour and a half each, from 7pm to 8:30pm on the two Tuesday evenings and from 11am to 1:30pm on the closing Sunday session. Participants are introduced to Canadian canoeing on the calm water of the River Bonet, which flows from Dromahair down into Lough Gill, one of the more scenic paddling routes in the northwest. An experienced local instructor leads the sessions, with all safety equipment provided, so no previous canoeing experience or your own gear is needed. Sessions may be postponed if weather conditions are judged unsafe, with participants notified in advance. Leitrim Sports Partnership, the county’s official sports development body, runs the course as part of its wider programme of subsidised outdoor activity courses held across the county through the summer months.
Adventure Gently is based at Boat Quay House in Dromahair village, on the River Bonet, about 20 minutes from Sligo town and 45 minutes from Carrick-on-Shannon by car on the R288. There is no scheduled bus service directly to the village, so a car is the practical way to reach it.
Dromahair was once the seat of the O’Rourke kings of West Breifne, and the roofless 1508 Creevelea Friary stands a short walk from the village along the Bonet. Lough Gill, the lake W.B. Yeats took the Isle of Innisfree from, lies just down the river. There is more to see in Dromahair and across Co. Leitrim.
