OUR: Conversations with the Collection

At Hunt Museum · The Custom House, Rutland Street, Limerick, Co. Limerick

Contemporary artwork displayed among the Hunt Museum collection

OUR: Conversations with the Collection is a contemporary exhibition at the Hunt Museum that sets new work by international and Irish artists, including Ibrahim Mahama, Gluwen Lyu and Cecilia Bullo, alongside objects from the museum’s permanent collection. Rather than a straightforward survey show, it is built around direct pairings and responses, with contemporary pieces placed in the same rooms as the historical and archaeological objects the Hunt Museum is known for. It runs at the museum’s Custom House building in Limerick city until Sunday, 20 September 2026.

What to expect

The exhibition threads contemporary work through the museum’s existing galleries rather than isolating it in a single room, so visitors encounter new pieces in conversation with centuries-old objects from the permanent collection, from medieval metalwork to Old Master drawings. Ghanaian artist Ibrahim Mahama, Chinese-born Gluwen Lyu and Italian-Irish artist Cecilia Bullo each bring a distinct practice, and the wall texts set out what each artist chose to respond to and why. The show is designed to be seen alongside the museum’s other summer exhibition, Our, Oir, Ore: Four Millennia of Limerick Silver and Gold, which shares the same run dates, so a single visit covers both. General admission to the Hunt Museum is free, though donations are welcomed at the door.

Getting there

The Custom House sits on Rutland Street on the edge of Limerick city centre, close to Arthur’s Quay and a short walk from the main shopping streets and bus station. Several public car parks are within a few minutes’ walk of the museum.

While you’re in Limerick

Pair a visit with the nearby medieval quarter around King John’s Castle, on the far side of the Abbey River, or a walk along the Shannon. There is more to see in Limerick and across Co. Limerick.
