Our, Oir, Ore: Four Millennia of Limerick Silver and Gold is a major exhibition at the Hunt Museum tracing the region’s long relationship with precious metals, from Bronze Age gold trade through to medieval and modern silverwork. The show draws on the Hunt Museum’s own collection alongside loans from Limerick Museum, the National Museum of Ireland and private lenders, and runs at the museum’s Custom House home on the banks of the Shannon until Sunday, 20 September 2026.
The exhibition argues that Limerick has been under-acknowledged as a centre of Bronze Age metal trade, and builds its case through objects spanning roughly four thousand years, from prehistoric gold ornaments to Limerick-made silver of the 18th and 19th centuries. Cases move broadly chronologically, setting locally found archaeological pieces alongside decorative silverware produced by Limerick’s own goldsmiths and silversmiths, a trade the city was once well known for. The exhibition runs alongside a companion show, OUR: Conversations with the Collection, which puts contemporary artists in dialogue with the museum’s permanent holdings, so a single visit can take in both. The Hunt Museum’s galleries occupy the restored 18th-century Custom House building on Rutland Street, and entry to the exhibition is included in general museum admission, which is free.
The Custom House sits on Rutland Street on the edge of Limerick city centre, close to Arthur’s Quay and a short walk from Limerick’s main shopping streets and bus station. Several public car parks are within a few minutes’ walk.
