Quantum Listening, Trudi van der Elsen

At Limerick City Gallery of Art · Carnegie Building, Pery Square, Limerick, Co. Limerick

Gallery visitors viewing the Quantum Listening exhibition

Quantum Listening is an exhibition by Dutch-born, Ireland-based artist Trudi van der Elsen at Limerick City Gallery of Art, running until Sunday, 30 August 2026. Working across painting, photography, video and performance, van der Elsen explores what she calls the connection between the human body and the natural world through invisible frequencies, using specific Irish landscapes as the starting point for each piece. The exhibition is free to visit and occupies the gallery’s Carnegie Building home on Pery Square.

What to expect

Van der Elsen uses her own body as an instrument, working directly at sites including Irish boglands, the mudflats of the Shannon Estuary and the ringfort of Cahercon, in what she describes as a performative engagement with each place, a concentration of presence and attention intended to draw out its atmosphere. The resulting paintings work as a record of perceived energy at each site, while the photographic and video pieces document the physical process of the performances themselves. The show sits at the crossing point of landscape art and performance art, and gives Limerick audiences a chance to see a significant body of new work by an artist whose practice is tied closely to the Shannon region. Limerick City Gallery of Art occupies the Carnegie Building, a Carnegie-funded former library on Pery Square, and admission to all its exhibitions is free.

Getting there

The gallery is on Pery Square, on the edge of Limerick city centre close to the People’s Park. It is a short walk from O’Connell Street and within reach of the city’s main car parks.

While you’re in Limerick

Pery Square and the neighbouring People’s Park make a pleasant stop before or after the gallery. There is more to see in Limerick and across Co. Limerick.
