Limerick City and County Council has opened a public consultation on the Compulsory Purchase Order 2026 for the Castleconnell Flood Relief Scheme, giving residents and landowners in the village a chance to view the order and submit their views before it closes at 5.30pm on Friday, 21 August 2026. The scheme is aimed at reducing flood risk in Castleconnell, a village on the Shannon that has faced repeated flooding in past years, and the compulsory purchase order relates to land needed to carry the works out.
The order and supporting maps are published on the council’s MyPoint portal, where anyone affected, or with an interest in the scheme, can read the detail of what land is involved and submit a formal response. As with the council’s other current consultations, a free MyPoint account is needed to make a submission, though the documents themselves can be viewed without registering. Because a compulsory purchase order is a more significant legal step than a general policy consultation, landowners directly affected typically receive separate individual notification alongside this public consultation window, and are encouraged to seek their own advice if the order affects their property.
Flooding has been a recurring concern for Castleconnell given the village’s position on the Shannon, and this compulsory purchase order marks a practical, if unglamorous, step in getting the wider relief scheme built: without the necessary land secured, the engineering works to protect homes and businesses along the river cannot proceed. Residents who are not directly named in the order but live in the area are still welcome to submit views on the scheme through the same MyPoint consultation, since the works will affect the village as a whole once construction begins.
