At Wexford Arts Centre Annexe · Wexford Arts Centre, Wexford
A week of art-making for children aged 4 to 7, the Little Artist Club Summer Camp at Wexford Arts Centre is a five-morning programme that takes young children through the work of some of the most influential artists of the last century. It is the kind of camp where children get their hands properly messy and come home with something they actually made - not a worksheet. If you have a child who likes painting the walls, this is a better outlet.
Each morning runs from 10am to 1pm in the Wexford Arts Centre Annexe. The week’s programme moves through a range of artists - Henri Matisse, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko and Irish modernist Eileen Gray - using each one as a jumping-off point for a different technique or material. Children try collage, painting, colour theory, textile weaving, printing and clay pottery across the five days, so there is genuine variety rather than the same activity repeated.
The focus is on process as much as outcome: children learn something about how an artist worked and then have a go at it themselves. The Wexford Arts Centre runs children’s art sessions throughout the year - the Saturday Little Artist Club is a regular fixture - so the camp is led by tutors who are used to working with this age group.
Wexford town is straightforward to reach. From Dublin, the M11 motorway takes you south through Arklow and on to Wexford in around an hour and a half. Irish Rail runs direct services from Dublin Connolly to Wexford station, which is a short walk from the Arts Centre. Bus Éireann coaches also serve the town on several routes.
The Arts Centre is on Cornmarket, in the centre of Wexford town. Pay-and-display parking is available on Abbey Street directly outside the building. Whites Hotel underground car park is about 50 metres away. The Rowe Street Church car park, a two-minute walk away near the Bullring, offers 24-hour pay-and-display at around €1.50 per hour.
Wexford town has a compact, walkable quayside and a strong local food scene - worth making a day of it rather than a drop-off and collect. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
