Balreask Junior Football Championship 2026 - Group Stage Opens

At Various venues, County Meath · Various, Co. Meath

Meath Junior Football Championship 2026 group stage

The Balreask Bar, Restaurant and Guest Accommodation Junior Football Championship is one of the oldest tiers of Gaelic football in County Meath - the county has been running a junior football championship since 1897. When the group stage kicks off on Friday 14 July 2026, clubs from across Meath take to their home grounds for the first round of what is a genuinely competitive county title. The stakes are real: the champions win promotion to the Intermediate grade and go on to represent Meath in the Leinster Junior Club Football Championship. For anyone who follows club GAA, or who wants to see county football stripped back to its community roots, this opening round is a good place to start.

What to expect

Junior championship football in Meath is played at club grounds around the county, typically on Friday evenings through July and August. The group stage divides clubs into pools, with each team playing a number of round-robin fixtures before the knockout stages begin. Games are tight - these are clubs with tight panels and real local pride at stake, and the standard is several cuts above a friendly or a league match. The 2025 title was taken by Clann na Gael, adding to their three county titles, but the junior grade regularly throws up a first-time winner. The Coolrite Junior B Football Championship also begins on the same weekend, so there may be two fixtures running at some venues on the night.

The Balreask Bar and Restaurant in Navan is the title sponsor - a long-standing local business that has backed the championship for a number of years.

Getting there

Matches are spread across club grounds throughout County Meath, so the specific venue for each fixture depends on which teams are playing. Check meath.gaa.ie for the confirmed dates, times, and venues when they are released closer to 14 July. Navan, the county town, is easily reached from Dublin via the M3 motorway (roughly 50 minutes), and Bus Eireann operates regular services from Dublin Busáras. Most club grounds have car parking on site or on nearby roads. If travelling from outside the county, pick your fixture first, then plan accordingly - grounds can be anywhere from Navan and Trim to Kells or Dunboyne.

While you’re in Navan

Navan sits at the meeting of the Boyne and Blackwater rivers, with Trim Castle, the Hill of Tara, and the Boyne Valley heritage sites all within a short drive. There is more to see in Navan and across Co. Meath.
