At Battle of the Boyne Visitor Centre - Oldbridge Estate · Oldbridge House, Oldbridge, Drogheda, Co. Meath
On a Sunday in July, Oldbridge Estate opens its grounds to a different kind of history - not the thunder of 1690, but the quieter rhythms of a Victorian summer. Time Steps Living History bring costumed interpreters to the parklands around Oldbridge House, walking visitors through estate life as it was lived in the 19th century. It suits families with older children, anyone with a curiosity about how the landed gentry and the people who served them actually spent their days, and visitors who want a free afternoon activity that feels genuinely worthwhile rather than merely photogenic.
Two guided tours run on the day - one at 12 noon and one at 2:30pm - both departing from the front of Oldbridge House. The interpreters move through the grounds in period dress, weaving stories about the family who lived here and the men and women who maintained the estate. Expect accounts of domestic service, estate management, and the textures of rural life in Victorian Ireland, all delivered in the setting the characters would have known.
The Oldbridge Estate itself adds considerable weight to the experience. The restored Oldbridge House sits within parklands that include a Victorian walled garden - complete with a sunken octagonal garden, herbaceous borders and a peach house - as well as the wider estate grounds that run down to the River Boyne. The visitor centre inside the house holds original weapons from the 1690 battle and a laser model of the battlefield, so there is plenty to take in before or after the living history tour. Admission to the visitor centre carries a separate charge; the living history tours themselves are free.
No pre-booking appears to be required, but capacity on a guided walk is naturally limited. Arriving a few minutes before your chosen session starts is wise.
Oldbridge is just south-west of Drogheda. From the M1 motorway, take Exit 9 and follow the signs for Oldbridge - it is a short drive from the junction. Coming from the south, the approach via Donore Village works well. Note that a section of Oldbridge Road is closed to vehicles, though it remains fully open to pedestrians arriving on foot or by bike.
By public transport, TFI Local Link Route 163 runs between Athboy and Drogheda eight times a day, seven days a week, and serves the estate. Check TFI schedules at transportforireland.ie to confirm times before travelling. Free parking is available on site for those driving.
The estate sits on the Co. Meath bank of the Boyne, a few kilometres from Drogheda town, which rewards an hour or two before or after. The town has the Millmount Museum, the medieval St Laurence’s Gate, and a solid choice of cafes and restaurants along the quays and Shop Street. There is more to see in Drogheda and across Co. Meath.
