At Various venues, County Meath · Various, Co. Meath
Club football in Meath runs deep, and the Meath Cleaning Supplies Premier 1 and Premier 2 Football Championships are where the county’s second and third tiers of club football play out across the summer months. These are the competitions that feed into the senior ranks - the clubs fighting here have serious ambitions, the pitches are local, and the atmosphere is the kind you only get when the whole parish has turned out to back their own. If you want Gaelic football without the crowds or the cost of an inter-county day, a Premier Championship fixture is a very good afternoon out.
Both the Premier 1 and Premier 2 competitions run in a group format across the summer, with knockout rounds following as the season tightens. Clubs from all corners of Co. Meath participate, so fixtures spread across the county’s club grounds - from Kells in the north to Trim in the west and across to the coastal fringes. Previous editions of the Premier Championship have seen finals hosted at Páirc Tailteann, the main county ground in Navan, though earlier rounds are played at home clubs. The championship is sponsored by Meath Cleaning Supplies and runs alongside the Fairyhouse Steel Senior and Meade Farm Intermediate championships, meaning there is often more than one fixture worth catching on any given weekend. Fixture dates and venues are confirmed by Meath GAA CCC (County Competitions Control Committee) as the draws are finalised - check meath.gaa.ie for the latest schedule before you travel.
Navan is the county town and the natural base for following Meath GAA. It sits roughly 48km north-west of Dublin city centre, about 45 minutes by road via the M3 motorway. Bus Éireann operates regular services between Dublin Busáras and Navan town centre (route 109), with the journey taking just over an hour. For fixtures at club grounds elsewhere in the county, a car is the practical option - most grounds have on-site or roadside parking. If the final is held at Páirc Tailteann in Navan, parking is available nearby and the town is walkable from the bus stop.
Navan has the River Boyne running through it and the Hill of Tara a short drive south - good company for a day trip around the county. There is more to see in Navan and across Co. Meath.
