At Various venues, County Meath · Various, Co. Meath
Sunday 9 July marks the opening of the K Windows and Doors Junior Hurling Championship group stage in County Meath, and if you have any connection to a club in the county, this is the weekend the local season truly begins. Junior club hurling is the grassroots level of the game - the competition where lads who grew up together represent their parish against the next village over. It is unpredictable, physical, and genuinely tribal in a way that senior inter-county matches rarely are. Bring a folding chair or a flask, and expect to stand on a grass bank beside people who know every player by first name.
Organised by Meath GAA’s Competitions Control Committee, the championship runs a group-stage-into-knockout format across club grounds throughout the county. The K Windows and Doors Junior 2 Hurling Championship also opens on 9 July, so the weekend offers a full programme of club hurling action. Teams play a number of group games to establish who progresses, with semi-finals and a county final to follow later in the summer.
Club grounds in Meath range from modest pitches with a couple of stands to well-appointed facilities with covered seating. All of them carry that particular atmosphere of a local match day - sideline banter, post-match chips, familiar faces from the same townland. Specific venues for each fixture are confirmed on meath.gaa.ie as the weekend approaches, as matches spread across multiple locations rather than a single central ground.
Navan, the county town, is the most practical base, sitting roughly 48km from Dublin via the M3 motorway. Bus Eireann route 109 links Dublin to Navan with regular services. For matches at outlying clubs, a car is the most sensible option - rural GAA grounds have field parking on site or roadside, and stewarding at this level is relaxed and informal.
The town has a good selection of pubs and cafes, and the Hill of Tara and Boyne Valley are a short drive away for anyone making a full day of it. There is more to see in Navan and across Co. Meath.
