At Various venues across Kells town · Kells, Co. Meath
The Kells TypeTrail is an annual walking trail and outdoor exhibition produced by local artist Mark Smith and his collective. It celebrates typography, calligraphy and lettering as a contemporary art form through up to 30 indoor and outdoor installations placed around the heritage town of Kells. The 2026 edition is themed ‘Process’, exploring the thinking, experimentation and craftsmanship behind creative work. It runs as part of the Hinterland Festival of Literature and Arts from 25 to 28 June 2026.
Dates: 25 to 28 June 2026, during Hinterland Festival weekend.
Trail is self-guided and free to walk; installations are spread throughout Kells town.
The trail launch event typically takes place on the Thursday evening of the festival at a town-centre venue.
Full festival programme and map at hinterland.ie.
Kells is served by Bus Eireann routes from Dublin and Navan. The town is compact and the trail is walkable from the town centre car parks.
