Hammer and Nail Theatre Group returns to Swift Cultural Centre with their annual grown-up spin on a children’s classic. Treasure Island: The Adult Panto takes Robert Louis Stevenson’s pirate story and rebuilds it as a strictly 18-plus comedy, following the group’s earlier adult pantos A-ladd-in and Sinderella at the same venue.
The show follows Jim Hawkins and his band of misfits on a voyage the group describes as “a swashbuckling adventure with a wicked twist,” mixing outrageous comedy, cheeky songs and larger-than-life pirate characters with plenty of direct audience banter, panto-style. It is explicitly for mature audiences only: the venue’s own listing warns the production “contains strong language and sexual jokes that are not suitable for children,” so this is one to leave the kids at home for. Expect the usual adult panto formula of innuendo-heavy dialogue, audience call-and-response, and a cast clearly enjoying pushing the traditional panto format somewhere spicier. Hammer and Nail have built a following in Trim with this format over successive years, and returning audiences from A-ladd-in and Sinderella will know roughly what to expect, while newcomers should go in prepared for a boisterous night out rather than a traditional family show.
Tickets are €25 and advance booking is recommended given the popularity of the group’s previous adult pantos at the venue.
Swift Cultural Centre is on High Street in the centre of Trim, a short walk from the town’s main car parks and bus stops. Trim is about 45 minutes from Dublin by road via the M3 and N51, and Bus Éireann services connect Trim to Dublin and Navan.
