The Moat Theatre’s summer workshops give children a proper week inside a working professional theatre - not a school hall with a makeshift stage, but a 200-seat auditorium with a fly tower and rehearsal rooms. Running throughout July and August 2026, the drama and creative performance classes suit children from about age 5 to 14, split into age-appropriate groups. This is the kind of programme where a shy seven-year-old comes home noticeably less shy.
The workshops are led by experienced theatre practitioners and cover the building blocks of performance: improvisation, character work, voice, movement, and scene study. The Moat Theatre has hosted Theatrics Naas summer camps in previous years, with an ethos built over more than 25 years around using drama to build confidence in young people - transferable skills, as they say, though you see the evidence more in how children carry themselves than in a certificate they bring home.
Sessions run as week-long programmes starting at 10:00am, with each week building towards a short showcase performance. Morning and afternoon slots are often available. Classes are entirely indoors and weather-proof. The programme welcomes complete beginners as readily as children who already perform; no prior experience is needed. Naas is the county town of Kildare, sitting on the N7 about 30km south-west of Dublin city centre - a straightforward 30-minute drive outside rush hour. Bus Éireann and Dublin Coach run frequent services on the Dublin - Naas corridor, stopping in the town centre. The Moat Theatre is on Main Street, within easy walking distance of the bus stops. Street parking is available in the town centre; the Friary Road car park is a short walk away.
