Moonlight - Screening at Nerve Centre

At Nerve Centre - Nerve Cinema · 7-8 Magazine Street, Derry, Co. Londonderry

Moonlight film poster

Barry Jenkins’s Moonlight is one of those rare films that stays with you long after you leave the cinema. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2017, it tells the story of Chiron - a Black man in Miami - across three chapters of his life: boyhood, adolescence, and adulthood. It is a film about identity, sexuality, loneliness, and the way people shape each other in ways they barely understand. If you have not seen it on a proper screen, this is the screening to go to. If you have already seen it, it rewards a second watch.

What to expect

The Nerve Centre screens Moonlight on 28 June as part of its Sizzling Summer of Films programme, which runs from 11 June through to late September 2026. The series brings a mix of Oscar winners and acclaimed recent releases to the Nerve Cinema - a proper independent picture house rather than a multiplex. The cinema has been upgraded with new seating, screen, sound system and an induction loop for hard of hearing audiences. Moonlight is one of the evening adult screenings in the summer lineup, alongside other heavyweight titles from the same period. The film runs approximately 111 minutes. Bring a jacket - cinema air conditioning tends to be fierce in summer.

Getting there

Derry is well connected by road. From Belfast, take the A6 westbound - the drive is around 70 miles and takes just over an hour. From Dublin, the A1/M1 north to Newry and then the A2 or A5 northwest brings you in at around two hours depending on traffic. Bus Eireann and Translink both run services into Derry’s bus station on Foyle Street, a short walk from the city centre. The Nerve Centre is on Magazine Street, right beside the historic city walls. Street parking is available nearby and there are pay-and-display car parks within a few minutes’ walk in the city centre. The venue is accessible on foot from most central accommodation.

While you’re in Derry

Derry is a genuinely walkable city and the Nerve Centre sits close to the walled city, the Guildhall, and the Peace Bridge over the Foyle. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
