WeeStorybook to Film: Revolting Rhymes screening

Sunday morning in Newcastle gets a little bit mischievous with this WeeStorybook to Film screening of Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes at Newcastle Community Cinema. This is a proper sit-together-and-enjoy event for small children and the grown-ups who bring them - not a drop-off, not a multiplex dash, but a warm community experience that mixes story time, the film, crafts, and a snack into one unhurried morning. It suits children in the toddler-to-early-primary years, and it is exactly the kind of thing that makes a Sunday feel well spent.

What to expect

The WeeStorybook to Film series runs in cooperation with WeeBookWorm, built around the idea that books and films belong together. The morning opens with story time before the screen lights up, giving younger children a gentle lead-in. The film is the 2016 BBC/Netflix animated adaptation of Revolting Rhymes - short, funny, beautifully animated, taking Little Red Riding Hood, Snow White and Cinderella and spinning them sideways with the Dahl twist. It is rated U, around 30 minutes per part, and moves at a pace that holds small attention spans without overwhelming them. Crafts follow the screening, and a snack is included for every child.

The whole morning runs to roughly 80-90 minutes. Spaces are limited - 39 tickets only - so booking through TicketSource ahead of time is sensible. Newcastle Community Cinema is a volunteer-run, non-profit operation, twice winner of the British Film Society of the Year award. The atmosphere at St Mary’s Hall is relaxed and local - popcorn machine, a bar for accompanying adults, accessible toilets.

Getting there

Newcastle, Co. Down sits on the edge of Dundrum Bay with the Mourne Mountains rising directly behind the town, about 45 minutes south of Belfast by car via the A24. The cinema is on Main Street in the town centre. From Belfast, Translink runs bus services to Newcastle from Europa Buscentre. Street parking is available in town and there is parking at the venue itself.

While you’re in Newcastle

After the film, the beach is a short walk from Main Street, and the Mournes make for an impressive backdrop even if you are only strolling the promenade. There is more to see in Newcastle and across Co. Down.
