Mullingar’s Sunday market sets up on Fair Green, next to Lifestyle and Pennys in the town centre, from 10:30am to 2:30pm every week. It is jointly supported by Westmeath County Enterprise Board, Westmeath County Council and Westmeath Community Development, which has kept it running as a fixture of the Westmeath county town’s weekend rather than a market that comes and goes with the seasons. For a county town market, the emphasis stays firmly on food: fresh produce and prepared goods rather than general craft stalls.
Stalls sell fresh vegetables and plants, chocolate and fudge, home baking, honey, preserves and chutneys, cut flowers, crepes, cheese, apple juice and smoked fish. Most of the producers are based in Westmeath itself, with others travelling in from neighbouring counties, so the market changes with the growing season, heavier on soft fruit and salad crops through summer and leaning into preserves and baking as the year turns. It runs under the same organiser, Michael Casey, who also runs the Saturday market in Athlone, giving both markets a similar feel and a similar core of stallholders who work the midlands weekend circuit. Sunday trading means it works well as a late-morning stop before lunch, with the town centre shops and Mullingar’s cathedral within a few minutes’ walk of Fair Green.
Fair Green is in Mullingar town centre, next to the Lifestyle and Pennys stores, an easy walk from Mullingar’s main shopping streets. Mullingar is on the Dublin to Sligo rail line and served by regular Bus Éireann and GoBus coaches from Dublin, with the train and bus stations both within walking distance of the town centre. Public car parks serve Fair Green and the surrounding streets.
