SIX - TEEN EDITION at the Playhouse Derry

At The Playhouse Derry · Artillery Street, Derry, Co. Derry

Theatre workshop for young people

If you have a teenager with a taste for performance, or one you’d simply like to prise away from a screen for a few days, SIX - TEEN EDITION at the Playhouse Derry is worth a serious look. This free, three-day intensive theatre workshop gives young people hands-on experience of drama and production in one of Northern Ireland’s most respected arts venues. It runs across 3-5 July 2026 and costs nothing to attend - which makes it one of the better summer opportunities for teenagers in the north-west.

What to expect

SIX - TEEN EDITION is a practical workshop rather than a passive performance. Participants get stuck into the craft of theatre - working on performance skills, creative drama, and the production side of putting a show together. The Playhouse has been running arts and education programmes for young people since it was founded in 1992, beginning as a small community arts resource and growing into one of Ireland’s leading producing theatres. Its learning work is built around exactly this kind of participatory, skills-based approach - the kind where teenagers leave having made something real, not just observed it. The programme is run at the Playhouse’s base on Artillery Street, a converted building in the older part of the city with proper rehearsal and performance space. Time varies across the three days so check directly with the venue on what sessions to show up for.

Getting there

Derry sits in the north-west of Ireland, roughly an hour and forty minutes by road from Belfast and about two and a half hours from Dublin via the M1 and A5. If you are coming from the Republic, the road through Monaghan and Omagh is straightforward. The Ulsterbus and Bus Éireann networks serve the city, and there are trains from Belfast Central to Derry on the Enterprise line. The Playhouse is on Artillery Street, close to the city centre walls - it is walkable from the bus and rail stations in about fifteen minutes. On-street parking is available around the walled city area; the Foyleside Shopping Centre car park nearby is a reliable option if you are driving in.

While you’re in Derry

The city has one of the finest intact walled circuits in Europe, and a walk along the top of them takes no more than an hour. The Bogside murals are a short walk from the Playhouse, and the city’s cafes and independent restaurants have improved considerably over the past decade. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
