The Princess Proms - Millennium Forum, Derry

At Millennium Forum · Newmarket Street, Derry, Co. Derry, BT48 6EB

The Princess Proms orchestral family concert at the Millennium Forum Derry

The Princess Proms is a live orchestral family concert that turns an afternoon at the theatre into a full participatory occasion. Children are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite princess or character - think Elsa, Moana, Belle, or any royal they love - and the atmosphere in the auditorium reflects that. Songs span a broad sweep of animated classics and musical favourites: Frozen, Wicked, Moana, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, and more. It is one of those shows where the audience is as much part of the event as the performers on stage. If you have a child aged roughly three to ten who is wild about Disney or musicals, this is a near-certain hit.

What to expect

The show is performed to a live orchestral arrangement, with singers from Enchanted Voices leading the concert. The set list covers beloved songs from animated films alongside some contemporary pop favourites, so parents and older siblings tend to enjoy it too. Children are actively welcomed to sing along - this is not a sit-still occasion. Fancy dress is optional but very much the spirit of the day; a good share of the audience will be in costume. The concert runs approximately 35 minutes, followed by an interval, making it a manageable length for younger children. Some venues running the Princess Proms series also offer a Meet and Greet option where children can have a special moment with a character performer - check the Millennium Forum listing for what is included in this Derry showing.

Getting there

Derry is well connected by road. From Belfast, the A6 dual carriageway runs directly into the city, roughly an hour’s drive. From Dublin, the journey via the M1 and A5 takes around two and a half hours. Bus Éireann and Ulsterbus run regular cross-border coach services, and Translink operates local city buses from the Foyle Street bus station - a short walk from the Millennium Forum on Newmarket Street. If you are driving, the city centre car parks near the Foyle Street area and Quayside Shopping Centre are the most convenient options. The Forum itself is inside the walled city, close to the main shopping streets.

While you’re in Derry

A matinee start leaves time before or after to take in the city. The walled city is compact enough to walk in an hour, and the Guildhall and Peace Bridge are both within easy reach of the theatre. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
