Sligo County Libraries hosts a touring presentation and demonstration of traditional Irish wool craft, led by Mary Cooper of Markree Woolcraft, across three of the county’s community libraries over three consecutive days in August 2026. The session covers hands-on techniques passed down through generations of Irish wool work, from raw fleece to finished piece, presented in each library’s own meeting space. It is a small, practical session rather than a lecture, aimed at anyone curious about how these crafts were, and still are, practised locally.
Mary Cooper demonstrates traditional wool craft techniques associated with Markree Woolcraft, walking attendees through the processes involved in working raw wool into yarn and finished textiles. Expect a hands-on, conversational session rather than a formal talk, with time for questions about the history and continued practice of the craft in County Sligo. The same presentation runs on three separate afternoons at three different libraries, so anyone who misses one date has two further chances to attend it that same week. Each session is free, but booking is required in advance directly with the individual library, as space in the meeting rooms is limited.
All three venues are library branches in their respective town centres. Tubbercurry, Ballymote and Sligo’s Stephen Street library are all within walking distance of local parking and bus stops.
