Sligo Summer Festival

At Sligo Town · Sligo Town, Co. Sligo

Sligo Summer Festival music and entertainment

Sligo Town takes on a different energy in the first weekend of August when the Sligo Summer Festival spreads across the town centre for three days of music, culture and community. This is a proper town festival - one that draws families, music fans and people who just want to be outdoors in good company - rather than a ticketed arena event removed from the life of the place. If you are making a trip to the west of Ireland in August, it is a worthwhile reason to anchor a visit in Sligo itself.

What to expect

The festival is centred on Queen Maeve Square and spills out across Sligo Town, with multiple performance areas running through the weekend (8-10 August). The music programme mixes nationally recognised Irish acts - past editions have featured artists like Nathan Carter and the Tumbling Paddies alongside rock and pop performers - with a Battle of the Bands that gives local and emerging talent a proper platform. The mix is intentional: the festival is as much about the town showing what it has as it is about bringing in headline names.

Beyond the headline stages, there are community activities and family programming running through the days, with food and beverage vendors set up across the festival footprint. The atmosphere tends to be relaxed in daylight hours and builds through the evenings. The 2026 full lineup and ticketing details are yet to be announced - check the official website as the programme develops closer to August.

Getting there

Sligo Town sits at the end of the N4 / N17 corridor, roughly 2.5 hours from Dublin and about 1 hour from Galway via the N17. Bus Eireann operates regular services from Dublin, Galway and surrounding towns into Sligo Bus Station on Lord Edward Street, which is a short walk from the town centre. If driving, there are several town-centre car parks including on Quay Street and off Wine Street, though festival weekends fill up - arriving mid-morning on Saturday or Sunday gives you the best chance of a space. The train from Dublin Connolly to Sligo takes around three hours and drops you at Sligo McDiarmada Station, again a walkable distance from Queen Maeve Square.

While you’re in Sligo

The town is well placed for a longer stay - Strandhill beach, Carrowmore megalithic cemetery and Ben Bulben are all within easy reach. There is more to see in Sligo and across Co. Sligo.
