Swinford Country Market - Monthly Food and Craft Market

At Swinford Cultural Centre · Swinford, Co. Mayo

Swinford Country Market with local producers and handcrafted items

Every first Saturday of the month, the Swinford Cultural Centre fills up with local producers, bakers, and makers for the town’s Indoor Country Market. It runs from 9.30am to 2pm, entry is free, and it has the unhurried feel of a community event rather than a tourist attraction. If you want to pick up something genuinely local - a jar of honey, a loaf of soda bread, a hand-thrown pot - this is the kind of market worth planning a morning around.

What to expect

The range is broader than most small-town markets manage. Stalls typically include home baking, breads, local honey, jams, preserves and chutneys, fresh fruit and vegetables, cut flowers, silk flower arrangements, herbs and plants, soaps, jewellery, greeting cards, cheeses, and olives. Handcrafts cover quilting, crochet, knitting, and home-spun wool. Live music from local musicians adds to the atmosphere on the day.

The on-site tea room, Cácaí Acla, is a good reason to slow down mid-browse. It serves teas, coffees, and homemade baked goods - the kind of stop that turns a quick look around into a proper morning out. The Cultural Centre itself is a well-restored building on Station Road, beside the library, with plenty of room to move around even when it is busy.

If you make crafts or grow produce and want a stall, the organisers can be reached at swinfordicm@gmail.com.

Getting there

Swinford sits on the N5 between Castlebar and Longford, roughly 25km east of Castlebar and 40km west of Longford. By car it is straightforward - the N5 runs right through the town. Street parking is available in the town centre close to the Cultural Centre on Station Road. Bus Éireann operates services along the N5 corridor; check the current timetables at buseireann.ie as frequency on rural routes can vary.

While you’re in Swinford

The market finishes at 2pm, which leaves time to walk Brabazon Woods or pick up the Callow Lakes Loop Trail (6.5km, with views of the Nephin range). Knock Shrine is about 20km south-west - a significant stop if you are travelling that way. There is more to see in Swinford and across Co. Mayo.
