What to Expect

The Ora Quartet, one of a newer generation of Irish string quartets building a strong following, brings a classical programme to glor’s main stage. The line-up is Siun Milne and Molly O’Shea on violin, Ali Comerford on viola and Yseult Cooper Stockdale on cello. The programme mixes four contrasting works: Haydn’s F major quartet from 1786, nicknamed “The Dream” for its calm, otherworldly slow movement; Alex Dowling’s contemporary piece Breathers, inspired by meditation; Shostakovich’s reflective String Quartet No. 11 from 1966, written in memory of a friend and colleague; and Schumann’s A minor quartet from 1842, which moves from a romantic slow movement to a celebratory finale. Pairing an eighteenth-century classic with a modern Irish composition and two very different nineteenth and twentieth century works gives the evening real range, and should appeal both to regular chamber music audiences and to anyone curious about a first classical concert. String quartet concerts are a rarer booking for glor than its regular diet of trad, folk and comedy nights, and the low €10 ticket price for under 18s in particular points to a deliberate effort to bring a younger audience into a genre they might not otherwise get to hear live in Clare. Each of the four pieces runs a different emotional register, from Haydn’s calm to Shostakovich’s grief, so the concert is structured more like a short musical journey than a single-mood recital.

glor is on Causeway Link in Ennis town centre, a short walk from the bus and rail station and the main town centre car parks. Ennis is served by Bus Eireann routes from Limerick, Galway and Shannon Airport, and by rail on the Limerick to Ennis line.
