At Guildhall Square · Guildhall Square, Derry BT48 6DD
Guildhall Square on a market Saturday has a particular energy to it. The Walled City Market draws a mix of locals doing their weekly shop and visitors who have wandered over from the city walls or the Peace Bridge, and the square - with the Victorian Guildhall at its back and the River Foyle just beyond - makes for one of the better settings you will find for a market anywhere in Ireland. This is a free, family-friendly event run by Derry City and Strabane District Council, and it turns up reliably on the first Saturday of each month from February through December.
The market is solidly food-led. Artisan traders bring homemade jams, chutneys and sauces, artisan breads and cakes, organic meats, smoked fish, fresh pasta, speciality teas and seasonal produce. Alongside the food stalls you will find handcrafted goods - original artwork, natural knitwear, bespoke gifts - and a scattering of street food options for eating on the spot. Reviewers mention Latin American street food appearing regularly among the traders. Children are well catered for, with entertainment laid on and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to spend an hour or two without feeling rushed. Live music adds to the air of the thing. Go early if you want the best pick from the bakers and preserves traders; popular lines do sell out before afternoon.
Derry sits in the north-west corner of the island and is easily reached by road from Belfast (about 75 minutes on the A6) or from Dublin (roughly 2 hours 45 minutes via the M1 and A5). Bus Eireann operates services from Dublin, and Translink runs frequent connections from Belfast on the Goldline 212. The Guildhall Square is right in the city centre - Foyle Metro buses serve the area and the square is a short walk from the bus station on Foyle Street. Parking in the city centre is available at a number of car parks off Foyle Street and Strand Road; the square itself does not have dedicated event parking, but the city centre car parks are within easy walking distance.
The market sits between the Guildhall - one of the most striking civic buildings in Ireland, with its stained-glass interior open to visitors - and the medieval city walls, which you can walk in full in under an hour. The Peace Bridge and the Bogside murals are both within easy reach on foot. There is more to see in Derry and across Co. Derry.
