Every Friday morning, Ballynacargy Parochial Hall opens for the village’s country market, a small weekly stall of home baking, preserves and garden produce run under the national Country Markets co-operative. Ballynacargy is a village of just over 200 people on the Royal Canal, 15km north-west of Mullingar, and the market is one of the few fixed weekly dates on its calendar alongside the pub and the GAA pitch. It is currently the only Country Markets listing active in Westmeath.
Country Markets is a volunteer-run network of halls across seven counties, including Dublin, Kildare, Leitrim, Louth, Meath, Westmeath and Wicklow, and Ballynacargy’s is the county’s remaining outpost on the official listings. Stalls are run by local producers rather than a commercial promoter, and the goods lean toward home baking, jams and chutneys, plants and cut flowers, and other fresh, locally produced items; under Country Markets rules, meat and cheese are not sold. The hall opens for a two-hour window on Friday mornings, short enough that regulars know to arrive close to opening for the best of the baking. It is a smaller, quieter market than Westmeath’s Saturday and Sunday farmers markets in Athlone and Mullingar, closer in spirit to a parish table than a food festival, but it has kept its weekly date in the village for years.
Ballynacargy is on the R393, about 15km (20 minutes) north-west of Mullingar, and 30km from Longford on the same road. There is no rail service to the village; the nearest station is Mullingar, on the Dublin to Sligo line. Local Link Westmeath’s route 853 runs Mullingar to Ballynacargy a few times on weekdays, but a car is the more reliable way to arrive on a Friday morning.
Ballynacargy’s other reason to visit is the Royal Canal, which passes through the village with its own harbour, lock and towpath greenway; the five-arch Whitworth Aqueduct over the River Inny is a fifteen-minute walk west along the towpath.
