At Wexford Arts Centre · High Street, Wexford, Co. Wexford
On summer Saturday evenings from August through to September, Wexford Arts Centre runs its Retro Movie Club - a series of beloved classic films shown on the big screen in the centre’s intimate theatre on Cornmarket. This is exactly the kind of screening that reminds you why cinema was made to be shared: a proper audience, darkness, and a film that has earned its reputation over decades. The lineup mixes crowd-pleasing adventure with cult favourites and a couple of dedicated ladies’ nights, making it a good fit for solo film lovers, couples, and groups of friends alike.
The series runs through August and into September, with individual screenings on selected Saturday evenings at 7:30pm. Films confirmed for the run include The NeverEnding Story, The Goonies, Labyrinth, and The Princess Bride - a strong cluster of films from the 1980s that hold up remarkably well on a large screen. Ladies’ nights in the series feature Grease and Magic Mike. The venue itself adds something to the experience: Wexford Arts Centre occupies a Georgian building dating from the 1770s, originally built as a corn exchange, then a town hall, and repurposed as an arts centre in 1974. The theatre space is compact enough to feel social without being cramped. Tickets are €7 per screening - worth checking the website for the exact title on any given date, as the programme rotates week to week.
Wexford town is well connected by road and rail. From Dublin, the M11 south takes you there in around 90 minutes; from Waterford, it is less than an hour on the N25. Irish Rail operates regular services on the Dublin Connolly to Rosslare Europort line, with Wexford station a short walk from the town centre. The Arts Centre sits on Cornmarket (sometimes listed as High Street), right in the middle of Wexford town - you can walk from the station in about ten minutes. Parking is available at several car parks nearby, including the Redmond Square car park close to the quays, a five-minute walk from the venue.
A Saturday evening screening fits neatly into a weekend away. Wexford town has a good range of restaurants and pubs on the quays and along the main street, so arriving early for dinner before the film is an easy plan. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
