Wexford Arts Centre Family Film Matinee

At Wexford Arts Centre · High Street, Wexford, Co. Wexford

Family film matinee at Wexford Arts Centre

Sunday afternoons in Wexford town take on a different feel in summer, and the Family Film Matinee series at Wexford Arts Centre is one of the better reasons to head into the centre. Running across weekends from July into early September, these afternoon screenings bring family-friendly and animated films to one of the county’s most characterful buildings. At €6 a ticket for children and adults alike, it is easy to fill a rainy Sunday without breaking the bank, and the venue itself is worth the trip.

What to expect

The screenings take place inside Wexford Arts Centre, a beautifully restored building on High Street that began life as a corn exchange in the 1770s. It has been an arts centre since 1974 and went through a significant €3 million refurbishment completed in 2022, so the spaces are comfortable and well-fitted. The film programme typically leans toward animated features and live-action family adventures - the kind of films that work for children from around five upwards while giving parents something to enjoy too. The title changes week to week, so it is worth checking the arts centre website ahead of the date you plan to attend. Doors usually open a little before the 2:30pm start, and arriving a few minutes early is sensible given the compact and popular nature of these afternoon slots.

Getting there

Wexford town is straightforward to reach from most of the county. From Dublin, the N11 and M11 bring you down in around 90 minutes under normal conditions; from Waterford, the N25 covers the distance in about 45 minutes. Bus Eireann runs regular services from Dublin, Waterford, and Rosslare Harbour into Wexford bus station, which sits close to the quays and is a short walk from High Street. The town centre is compact on foot. Parking is available at several car parks near the quays and off Redmond Place - street parking on and around High Street can be tight at weekends, so a car park is the more reliable option.

While you’re in Wexford

Wexford town is well worth an hour or two before or after the film. The medieval street pattern survives in the narrow lanes off Main Street, and the Quays are pleasant to walk along on a fine afternoon. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
