Wexford Cinema Club

At Wexford Arts Centre · Cornmarket, Wexford, Co. Wexford

Cinema club film screening

For film lovers in Wexford and the surrounding area, the last Friday of each month brings a rare kind of evening out. Wexford Cinema Club gathers at the Wexford Arts Centre for a €5 screening of an independently chosen film - the kind that rarely makes it to the multiplex - followed by a proper conversation about what you just watched. It suits anyone who finds most mainstream cinema a bit thin, and anyone curious about world or classic film who would enjoy hearing what other people made of it.

What to expect

The screening starts at 7:30pm in the Wexford Arts Centre, one of Ireland’s oldest regional arts centres, housed in a converted 18th-century market house on Cornmarket. The building itself is worth arriving early for - the bones of it go back to 1776, and it has been a centre of cultural life in the town since 1974.

The Cinema Club selects from independent, classic and international titles. That typically means you might see a restored European arthouse film one month, a celebrated Irish director’s lesser-known work the next, or a film from a country whose cinema rarely gets a screen in Ireland at all. The selection rotates and is not announced far in advance, so checking the Arts Centre website in the week or two before is the reliable way to know what is showing.

After the film, the discussion is informal. There is no pressure to have a formed critical opinion - the conversations tend to wander wherever the film takes them. It is a sociable evening, and the €5 admission makes it a low-commitment way to try something new.

Getting there

Wexford town sits at the south-east tip of Ireland, roughly two hours from Dublin by road via the N11/M11. Rosslare Europort is about 20 minutes south - so if you are arriving by ferry from Fishguard or Pembroke Dock, Wexford is on your way. Bus Eireann connects Wexford to Dublin several times daily, and the journey on the Wexford Expressway takes under two hours. Wexford train station is on the Iarnrod Eireann Dublin - Rosslare line.

The Arts Centre is on Cornmarket, right in the centre of town and within easy walking distance of most accommodation. Street parking is available nearby in the evenings, and there are several short-stay car parks within a few minutes on foot.

While you’re in Wexford

Wexford is a compact, walkable town with a long quayside, a mediaeval street grid and a good range of places to eat and drink close to the Arts Centre. The county beyond the town has a very different character - wide estuaries, long beaches and some of the quietest roads in Leinster. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
