At Wexford Arts Centre · High Street, Wexford, Co. Wexford
Every last Friday of the month, a small crowd gathers at Wexford Arts Centre on High Street for something you will not find at the multiplex. The Cinema Club screens independent, classic, and international films - the kind of titles that reward attention and tend to generate conversation on the walk home. At €5 a seat, it is one of the better-value cultural evenings in the south-east, and a comfortable way to meet other people in town who take film seriously.
The screening takes place inside Wexford Arts Centre, which has been running arts programming in the town since 1974, making it the oldest regional arts centre in Ireland. The building is the historic Cornmarket on High Street - a central, easy-to-find landmark.
The September programme follows the club’s usual format: a carefully chosen film, then an informal discussion once the credits roll. The atmosphere is relaxed rather than academic. You do not need to know a great deal about cinema to join in, but if you do, the conversations tend to run long. The selection leans toward films that would not get a commercial release here - world cinema, festival favourites, and titles that have aged well enough to be worth revisiting on a proper screen.
The Arts Centre also has a bar and café, so arriving a little early and settling in beforehand is easy enough. Doors are typically open well ahead of the 7:30pm start.
Wexford town sits at the southern tip of Co. Wexford, roughly 145km south of Dublin. By car, take the M11 or N11 from Dublin, then the N25 into town - the journey runs about 90 minutes in light traffic. From Waterford, the N25 heads east and takes around 45 minutes.
By rail, Irish Rail runs regular services from Dublin Connolly and Rosslare Europort into Wexford station, which is a short walk from the town centre. Bus Éireann also serves Wexford from Dublin, Waterford, and Kilkenny on routes that arrive close to the central streets.
High Street is in the old town, within easy walking distance of most car parks in the area. The Redmond Square car park and Custom House Quay car park are both nearby and straightforward to use on a Friday evening.
Wexford town is compact and walkable, with a long quayside, a well-preserved medieval street pattern, and a strong tradition of the arts - it is home to one of Ireland’s most celebrated opera festivals each October. There is more to see in Wexford and across Co. Wexford.
