Wicked at Bord Gais Energy Theatre

At Bord Gais Energy Theatre · Grand Canal Square, Docklands, Dublin 2

Wicked musical at Bord Gais Energy Theatre Dublin

One of the most beloved musicals ever staged is coming to Dublin for a summer run, and if you have never seen it on a proper theatre screen, this is the chance to put that right. Wicked tells the story of Elphaba and Glinda - two very different young women who become unlikely friends at university before their paths diverge into the familiar figures of Oz. It reframes the whole fairy tale from the side of the villain, and does it with such warmth and wit that most audiences leave wanting to see it again. It suits theatre fans of all ages, couples, and families with children aged seven and upwards.

What to expect

This is a full-scale touring production, the same calibre as the long-running West End version - not a stripped-back road show. Bord Gais Energy Theatre, with its 2,111-seat auditorium across stalls, circle, and upper circle, is one of the few venues in Ireland with the technical capability to handle it. The staging is ambitious: flying sequences, a full orchestra pit, sweeping set changes, and costumes that have become iconic. The show runs approximately two hours and forty-five minutes including an interval.

The music is by Stephen Schwartz, who won Oscar and Grammy awards for his work, and the book is by Winnie Holzman. Director Joe Mantello’s production has been described by the Irish Independent as “a great blockbuster musical.” The standout number, “Defying Gravity” at the end of the first act, is the kind of theatrical moment that stays with people for years.

Evening shows are at 7:30pm, with Wednesday and Saturday matinees at 2:30pm. Note that the production uses strobe lighting, loud noises, flashing lights, and smoke effects.

Getting there

The theatre sits on Grand Canal Square in the Docklands, one of the best-connected locations in Dublin. The closest DART station is Grand Canal Dock, a short walk away, which brings you directly from Pearse Street in the city centre or from Connolly Station on the northside. The Luas Red Line stops at Mayor Square (NCI), around ten minutes on foot. Dublin Bus services from across the city stop within a ten-minute walk on Pearse Street and Ringsend Road. If you are driving, Q-Park Grand Canal Square is right beside the theatre, accessed via Chimney View off Pearse Street. Parking fills quickly on show nights, so arriving early or taking public transport is the sensible call.

While you’re in Dublin

Grand Canal Square is a lovely spot to start an evening - the waterfront boardwalk is well worth a wander before the show, and there are good restaurants and bars within a few minutes. There is more to see in Dublin and across Co. Dublin.
