Wicklow Comedy Club at O'Shea's Corner

At O'Shea's Corner · Abbey Street, Wicklow, Co. Wicklow

Stand-up comedy night poster

Saturday night stand-up in a proper pub venue, with three of the better names on the Irish comedy circuit. The Wicklow Comedy Club has been running upstairs in O’Shea’s Corner since it launched a few years back, and it has settled into a reliable format: at least three acts, an MC keeping the room moving, and a crowd that is there to have a good time. This one falls on a summer Saturday, which helps - the pace is relaxed, the pub is lively, and Wicklow town is worth the trip on its own. Good for couples, friend groups, anyone who wants a night out that is a bit more than just drinks.

What to expect

The show runs in the Loft venue at O’Shea’s Corner - the upstairs room gives it more of a dedicated comedy-club feel than a pub-with-a-mic setup. The July 4th line-up is Fred Cooke, Gar Murran, and MC Paul Marsh. Fred Cooke is a Meath native and a familiar face on Irish TV (he has appeared on the Tommy Tiernan Show) with a style that tends toward physical comedy and surreal set-pieces. Gar Murran has been a regular on the Irish circuit for years - a Bulmers Comedy Competition winner and a frequent headliner at venues including the Laughter Lounge and the Comedy Cellar. Paul Marsh holds the MC chair, which is its own skill: keeping two hours moving, warming up the room, and filling the gaps between acts. Expect the show to run about two hours. This is the Saturday night show in a back-to-back weekend run, so the room will have some momentum behind it.

Getting there

Wicklow town is about 50 km south of Dublin on the N11/M11 - roughly 45 minutes by car outside of commuter hours. By public transport, Bus Eireann and Dublin Coach both run regular services between Dublin city centre and Wicklow town, and the journey takes around an hour. Wicklow also has a DART-connected rail link from Dublin, though check the late-night return times before you go, as Sunday morning frequency can be limited. O’Shea’s Corner is on Abbey Street in the town centre, a short walk from the bus and train stops. Street parking is available in the town centre; some spots are pay-and-display during the day but tend to free up in the evening.

While you’re in Wicklow

Wicklow town sits right on the coast with the Vartry River running through it, and there is good eating and drinking along Main Street and the quays. Arriving earlier in the day gives you a chance to walk the headland or visit the ruins of the old gaol on High Street, which is one of those places that is genuinely worth an hour. There is more to see in Wicklow and across Co. Wicklow.
