At The Plaza, Mermaid Arts Centre · Main Street, Bray, Co. Wicklow
Lempen Puppet Theatre Company performs two free puppet shows on the plaza outside Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray on Saturday, 8 August 2026, at 11am and 1pm. Stories from the Penny Farthing pairs two tales, Penny and the Far Thing and The Fisher and His Wife, told through puppetry rather than a stage script, and needs no ticket or booking. The company has been making puppet theatre inspired by myth, folklore and nature for more than 30 years, and this outdoor slot is aimed at families passing through Bray town centre on a Saturday.
Each performance runs around 40 minutes and is split into two shorter 20-minute stories. Penny and the Far Thing follows the adventures of a penny farthing bicycle in a tale built around the changing seasons, while The Fisher and His Wife retells the classic folk story of a fisherman, his wife and a magical talking fish that grants wishes, a story with a well-known moral about greed. Because it takes place outdoors on the plaza rather than inside a theatre, families can come and go freely, and the two showtimes, 11am and 1pm, give parents a choice of morning or early afternoon slot. The event is billed as suitable for all ages, so it works well for a mixed group of younger and older children together.
The plaza sits directly outside Mermaid Arts Centre on Main Street, a short walk from Bray DART and rail station and close to the seafront.
The plaza is right in the middle of Bray town centre, close to shops, cafes and the seafront. There is more to see in Bray and across Co. Wicklow.
