Anne-Marie Comey Memorial 5km Run and Walk - Summerhill

At Summerhill Village · Summerhill, Co. Meath

Participants at the Anne-Marie Comey 5km run in Summerhill

Every July, the people of Summerhill and beyond lace up their runners and gather in the village to take on a 5km route in memory of Anne-Marie Comey, a local woman who passed away in July 2024 after illness. The event, now in its second year, raises money for the Irish Cancer Society and has already proved that the community around it runs deep - the 2025 edition raised over €61,000 for the charity. It is a run for those who want to push themselves, and a walk for those who simply want to show up, and both are equally welcome.

What to expect

The start is at 8pm on Friday 24 July, in Summerhill village, Co. Meath. The course is a 5km route open to runners and walkers of all abilities - no qualifying time, no pressure, just people moving together for a good reason. Registration is handled through Pop Up Races, which manages timing chips and results for the event. After the run, refreshments are served at Summerhill Community Centre, giving participants a chance to catch their breath, meet neighbours, and mark the occasion properly. The atmosphere at events like this is warm and local - you will find plenty of first-timers alongside regular club runners, all there for the same reason.

Getting there

Summerhill sits in the south of Co. Meath, roughly 15km south of Navan and about 35km from Dublin city centre. The R158 connects it to Trim to the west and Dunboyne to the east; from Dublin, the M3 motorway to Junction 7 (Dunboyne) is the quickest approach, then the R156 west into the village. There is no direct bus service to Summerhill from Dublin, so a car or lift is the practical option for most people. Village parking is available around the green and community centre; with an 8pm start in late July you will have good evening light for the walk in.

While you’re in Summerhill

Summerhill is a compact heritage village with a strong GAA tradition and a community centre that punches above its weight for a place its size - indoor sports hall, tennis courts, an outdoor gym, and a bar and restaurant on site. The wider area has Dangan Castle and the old Agher Church, associated with Jonathan Swift. There is more to see in Summerhill and across Co. Meath.
