At Armagh Cricket Club · The Mall, Armagh, Co. Armagh, BT61 9BQ
Three weeks of cricket coaching on one of Ireland’s most storied grounds - this summer scheme from Armagh Cricket Club is the kind of thing that gets kids hooked on sport for life. Open to boys and girls aged 7 to 16, it runs across three separate weeks in late July and early August, with no experience needed to join. Whether a child has never held a bat or already plays for a school team, the sessions are pitched to welcome them all. Parents looking for something structured, active, and genuinely good value in the summer holidays will find it hard to beat.
Sessions run Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 10am to 1pm, with three separate weeks to choose from (you can sign up for one, two, or all three). The coaching is led by Samuel Wilson, Armagh Cricket Club’s 1st XI vice captain, alongside Luan Liebenberg, a South African coach returning for his second season with the scheme. Between the two of them, children get proper technique work in batting, bowling, and fielding - not just a knockabout in a field.
The venue adds something too. The Mall has been used for cricket since the 1840s and Armagh Cricket Club has been playing here since 1861, making it one of the oldest continuously used cricket grounds in Ireland. It has hosted international fixtures, including an ICC Trophy match in 2005. Children will be training on a ground with genuine heritage, with the city of Armagh as a backdrop.
The scheme books up quickly. Registration is by phone and, given the demand from previous years, it is worth contacting Samuel Wilson as soon as possible to secure a place.
The Mall sits right in Armagh city, a short walk from the bus station on Lonsdale Road and from the main city centre car parks on Dobbin Street and Friary Road. The ground is well signposted and easy to find on foot from the centre. If you are driving from Belfast, Armagh is about an hour south-west on the A3. From Dublin, take the M1 north and cross into Northern Ireland at Newry, then follow the A28 into Armagh - roughly an hour and a half.
Armagh is a city that repays a longer visit - two cathedrals, the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium, and the Palace Demesne public park are all within easy reach of The Mall. There is more to see in Armagh and across Co. Armagh.
