Blakes of the Hollow runs a traditional Irish music session every Friday night from 10pm in The Hollow, its original Victorian bar on Church Street. The pub has traded since 1887 and its Atrium and Level 7 rooms stay open alongside The Hollow on a Friday, giving the building a fuller, later atmosphere than midweek, with the trad session as its most consistent musical fixture.
Musicians gather in The Hollow from around 10pm, working through reels, jigs and hornpipes on fiddle, flute, banjo, accordion and bodhran, with room for singers and occasional songs between sets. It is an open session in the traditional sense, meaning visiting musicians who know the tunes are welcome to sit in rather than a booked act performing to the room. The pub itself is part of the draw: its dark wood counter, pitched pine ceiling and etched glass are original to the 1887 building and have barely changed, giving the music a setting that matches it. Blakes also runs sessions on Wednesday and Saturday, but the Friday night tends to be the busiest of the three, drawing a mix of regulars who know the players and visitors who have come in off Church Street on the strength of the building. There is no cover charge to listen or to join in.
Blakes is on Church Street in Enniskillen town centre, a short walk from the bus station and the Tesco car park on the west bank of the Erne. Friday nights get busier than midweek, so arriving before 10pm improves the chances of a seat near the musicians.
