At Blessington Mart · Holy Valley, Blessington, Co. Wicklow, W91 Y667
Blessington Mart runs two livestock sale days every week at its Holy Valley yard on the edge of the Wicklow Mountains, sheep on Tuesday mornings and cattle and calves on Thursdays. Established in 1952 by the Doyle family from Donard, the mart draws buyers and sellers from every county for its sheep trade in particular, and it remains a working agricultural mart rather than a visitor attraction, open to the public as a spectator event around the ring.
Tuesday’s sale starts at 10.30am with sheep, drawing on Blessington’s long standing reputation for breeding sheep sales, including the annual Wicklow Mountain Sheep Breeders sale. Thursday’s sale starts at 11am with calves and weanlings, followed by cows, weanlings, heifers and bullocks from 11.30am. Both days follow the ordinary rhythm of an Irish livestock mart: animals penned from early morning, an auctioneer working the ring, and buyers and farmers trading prices in real time, with results published afterwards through Agriland and the mart’s own sales reports. The mart is owned and run by JP and M Doyle Limited, who have operated it since the 1950s, and it sells throughout the year rather than on a seasonal basis.
Blessington Mart is at Holy Valley on the edge of Blessington, a short drive from the town centre off the N81. There is space to park at the mart itself, and it is easiest reached by car given the early sale times.
The mart sits just outside Blessington, the west Wicklow town best known as the gateway to the Wicklow Mountains and Blessington Lakes. There is more to explore across Co. Wicklow.
