Tullow Family Fun Run

At Tullow Town · Tullow, Co. Carlow

Families and children running in a community fun run

A community fun run and family walk through Tullow on a Sunday morning in August is exactly the kind of event that a town like this does well. The Tullow Family Fun Run brings together local families, runners of all paces, and plenty of spectators along the route, with entry fees going to local causes. If you have young children who want to join in, or you are just looking for an easy way to spend a Sunday morning in a friendly Co. Carlow town, this is a low-pressure, sociable morning out.

What to expect

The format follows the familiar Irish community fun run pattern: a 5km run route for those who want to push themselves, alongside a shorter family walk for younger children and anyone who would rather take it easy. Medals or finisher tokens typically go to all participants, which tends to matter a great deal to the under-tens. The atmosphere is festive rather than competitive - you will see buggies, dogs on leads, older runners, and children running flat out for the first 200 metres before slowing dramatically.

Funds raised go to local schools, clubs, or charities chosen by the Tullow Community organisers. Entry starts from €5 per person. Younger children may be free or at a reduced rate - check with the organisers closer to the date for the exact pricing structure.

Registration is usually available in advance online or through local shops in the town. Keep an eye on KCLR 96FM and The Nationalist newspaper for confirmed details on the route start point, which has varied between the town square and the local GAA grounds in previous years.

Getting there

Tullow sits on the N81, roughly 18km south of Carlow Town. From Dublin, take the M9 motorway south to junction 4 and follow signs for Tullow via the N80. The drive from Dublin is around an hour. From Carlow Town, Tullow is a straightforward 20-minute run on the N81.

Bus Eireann serves Tullow on routes connecting Carlow Town and Wicklow, though services on Sundays are limited and infrequent. Driving is the practical option for most visitors. On-street parking is available in the town centre, and Tullow is compact enough that wherever you park, you are close to the action.

While you’re in Tullow

Tullow is a proper market town on the banks of the River Slaney, with a history running back to the Anglo-Norman period. The Fr. John Murphy Memorial in the town centre marks one of the leaders of the 1798 rebellion. Rathwood, just outside the town, is a popular destination for woodland walks and family activities - worth a stop if you have energy left after the run. There is more to see in Tullow and across Co. Carlow.
