At Carlow Golf Club · Deerpark, Carlow, Co. Carlow
Carlow Golf Club’s annual Open Week throws open its Deerpark course to visiting golfers for a full week of competitive play every July. It is one of those events that draws players from across Leinster and beyond - not just for the prize table, but for the chance to test themselves on a course that has genuine pedigree. If you have been meaning to play Deerpark and want a bit more structure than a casual round, this is the week to do it.
The competition runs across several days in different formats - Stableford and stroke play are both typical of Open Week programmes at clubs like Carlow - with separate prizes across handicap categories. Visiting golfers of all handicaps are welcome, though a valid GUI or ILGU handicap certificate is required to enter.
The course itself is the main draw. Deerpark has been in play since 1922, and was reshaped in 1937 by Tom Simpson and Molly Gourlay - a rare inland Simpson design in Ireland. The mature trees and rolling fairways reward accurate iron play over brute length. The clubhouse has a bar, restaurant, and pro shop, so there is no need to rush off after your round.
Entry fees vary by competition day, starting from around €25. Booking in advance through the club office is strongly recommended, as popular days fill quickly. Full details and the confirmed 2026 schedule are at carlowgolfclub.com.
Carlow Golf Club is at Deerpark on the eastern side of Carlow town, roughly 2 km from the centre. By car, the M9 motorway from Dublin takes under an hour; the N80 connects from the midlands. Car parking is available at the clubhouse. Bus Eireann runs regular services to Carlow town, with the club a short taxi ride from the stop.
Carlow town is a compact, walkable place - the medieval castle ruin by the Barrow is a five-minute stroll from the river walk, and the county museum on College Street is worth an hour. There is more to see in Carlow and across Co. Carlow.
