Learn to Cycle Camp in Bagenalstown

What to Expect

Active Carlow, the county’s local sports partnership, runs a three-day Learn to Cycle Camp for 5 to 7 year olds at Queen of the Universe National School in Bagenalstown. Over three consecutive mornings, qualified instructors take small groups of children through the basics of balance, pedalling, braking and steering, working at a pace suited to complete beginners as well as children who are close to cycling unaided. The camp is pitched as a foundation course rather than a one-off taster, aiming to send children home able to ride confidently and safely, ideally without stabilisers, by the end of the three days. It is run through Carlow Parent Hub, the county’s central booking point for children’s activities, alongside other holiday programmes such as the Outdoor Adventure Hub and Stepping Stones camps, so parents booking one often find out about the others at the same time. Active Carlow is the county’s local sports partnership, funded to widen participation in sport and physical activity, and cycling camps like this one are part of a wider push to get children more active outside school PE, with an obvious safety benefit for families living on rural roads around Bagenalstown where children have fewer footpaths to practise on.

• €20 per child for the full three-day camp.

Getting There

Queen of the Universe National School is on Long Range on the edge of Bagenalstown, a short drive from the town centre. There is on-site car parking at the school for drop-off and collection.
