Lemoncello at VISUAL Carlow

At The George Bernard Shaw Theatre, VISUAL Carlow · Old Dublin Road, Carlow, Co. Carlow

Singer-songwriter and cellist performing together on stage

Lemoncello pairs singer-songwriter Laura Quirke with cellist and arranger Claire Kinsella, a two-piece setup that gives their songs an unusually rich, orchestral texture for what is essentially an acoustic act. Their most recent record, Perfect Place, blends folk songwriting with electronic production touches, and the Carlow date is part of a wider tour built around that album.

What to Expect

Expect an intimate, listening-room atmosphere rather than a big-production concert: cello and voice built around close storytelling songs, with the duo’s own description framing their sound as one that “shimmers with the tones of modern Ireland.” The material explores connection and human relationships through detailed, personal lyrics rather than broad anthems, and the small-scale instrumentation - just cello, voice and whatever electronic layering they bring live - keeps the focus tightly on the songwriting. It suits an audience that enjoys singer-songwriter and chamber-folk acts over full-band shows.

Getting There

VISUAL is on the Old Dublin Road on the northern edge of Carlow Town, with its own car park. It’s roughly a 20-minute walk from Carlow railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line, or a short taxi ride.

About the Venue

VISUAL opened in 2009 on land donated by Carlow College, built after an international design competition won by British architect Terry Pawson. The complex pairs the 330-seat George Bernard Shaw Theatre with gallery space that stages around 15 exhibitions a year, and admission to the galleries is free, Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 5:30pm and Sunday 2pm to 5pm. It’s worth building in time before or after a show to see what’s currently on display.
