A Night of Opera at Carlow Methodist Church

A Night of Opera is the first of a five-week run of free concerts and theatre pieces staged in Carlow Methodist Church as part of the Carlow Beo! programme, organised jointly by Carlow County Council’s arts office, the Carlow Local Enterprise Office and the Methodist community. The whole series is free to attend with no booking system.

What to Expect

The evening features recent graduates of the Royal Irish Academy of Music performing a mixture of operatic arias and classical works in the intimate setting of the Methodist Church on the Athy Road. It’s a small-scale recital rather than a full opera staging - no sets or costumes, just voice and accompaniment in a church acoustic that suits unamplified classical singing well. The series exists to put professional-standard classical performance in front of a Carlow audience for free, and this opening night sets the tone for the four concerts that follow it through August and September.

Getting There

Carlow Methodist Church is on the Athy Road, within walking distance of Carlow town centre and the railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line. On-street parking is available nearby, with the Fairgreen car park a short walk away.

The Athy Road is close enough to the centre for a wander either side of the concert. Carlow Castle’s riverside ruins sit on the bank of the River Barrow, and the Carlow County Museum on College Street gives a good grounding in local history if classical music sends you looking for more context on the town itself.
