Tunes, Songs and Tall Tales at Carlow Methodist Church

Tunes, Songs and Tall Tales closes out the five-week Carlow Beo! concert and theatre series at Carlow Methodist Church, and it’s the most traditionally Irish of the five nights: a straightforward evening of trad music and song rather than the poetry, opera or drama that filled the earlier weeks.

What to Expect

Four musicians share the bill: Dave Sheridan, Michelle Powderly, Mick Foley and Nell Ní Chróinín, playing traditional tunes and songs interspersed with stories, in keeping with the “tall tales” of the title. It’s a session-style format rather than a formal concert - expect introductions between tunes and a relaxed, conversational pace rather than a tightly staged show. As the closing night of the series, it also acts as a send-off for the whole run, which started in mid-August with classical and theatre pieces and has moved steadily toward home-grown Irish material by its final week.

Getting There

Carlow Methodist Church is on the Athy Road, within easy walking distance of Carlow town centre and the railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line. On-street parking is available nearby, with the Fairgreen car park a short walk away.

As the closing night of the series, it’s a good excuse to see more of the town either side of the show.
