At The George Bernard Shaw Theatre, VISUAL Carlow · Old Dublin Road, Carlow, Co. Carlow
We Will Rock You is the jukebox musical built around Queen’s back catalogue, and this run at VISUAL Carlow is a youth production staged by Evento Creative Arts Academy over three nights. It’s listed on the venue’s own music programme rather than its drama listings, reflecting how much of the show rides on the live performance of the songs themselves.
Around 60 young performers, drawn from Carlow and surrounding counties including Cork, Donegal, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois and Wexford, take on the show’s story of a world where corporation Globalsoft has banned live music and a group of rebels fight to bring it back. Expect the hits threaded through a full narrative rather than a straight concert: “We Will Rock You”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Radio Ga Ga” and the rest of the Queen catalogue delivered with choreography and staging built for a young, large-cast production. The show carries a 12+ recommendation for mild adult humour and occasional strong language.
VISUAL is on the Old Dublin Road on the northern edge of Carlow Town, with its own car park. It’s roughly a 20-minute walk from Carlow railway station on the Dublin Heuston to Waterford line, or a short taxi ride.
VISUAL opened in 2009 on land donated by Carlow College, built after an international design competition won by British architect Terry Pawson. The complex pairs the 330-seat George Bernard Shaw Theatre with gallery space that stages around 15 exhibitions a year, and admission to the galleries is free, Tuesday to Saturday 11am to 5:30pm and Sunday 2pm to 5pm. It’s worth building in time before or after a show to see what’s currently on display.
