Carlow Family Fun at Leighlinbridge Village

At Leighlinbridge Village · Leighlinbridge, Co. Carlow

Families by a riverside village in summer

Leighlinbridge throws open its doors each summer for a free community day along the River Barrow - and if you have children in tow, or you simply enjoy a village at its most alive, this is the kind of afternoon worth putting in the diary. Organised by the local community, the day draws families from across Co. Carlow and beyond for outdoor fun, fresh air, and the easy company of a village that knows how to put on a good welcome.

What to expect

The event is rooted in the Irish word spraoi - play, fun, a bit of carry-on - and that spirit runs through the day. Expect outdoor activities for children, community stalls, and the relaxed atmosphere that comes from a village genuinely proud of where it lives. Leighlinbridge has won the National Tidy Towns competition and carries the title of “Garden Village” for good reason - the Millennium Garden, the Vivaldi Garden, the Garden of Remembrance and other themed community spaces give the event a beautiful backdrop. The River Barrow runs through the middle of it all, with the broken tower of Black Castle - one of Ireland’s earliest Norman fortifications, dating to the 14th century - watching over from the bank. Programming is organised locally and confirmed closer to the date; check the KCLR 96FM listings or the Carlow GAA and community social channels for the running schedule.

Getting there

Leighlinbridge sits on the N9, 11km south of Carlow town - roughly a 12-minute drive. From Dublin, take the M9 motorway south and exit at Carlow, then follow the N9 south through Carlow town. The village is also reachable from Kilkenny via the R448 northwest. Bus Éireann runs services between Dublin and Waterford that stop in Carlow town; from there a taxi or lift to Leighlinbridge is around ten minutes. Parking is available in the village, including near the bridge and along the riverside - arrive a little early on a busy summer Sunday and you will have no trouble finding a spot.

While you’re in Leighlinbridge

The Barrow Way towpath starts from the village bridge and offers easy flat walking or cycling along the river - a gentle way to extend the afternoon once the main programme winds down. The village has a handful of pubs and a café for food and a sit-down after. There is more to see in Leighlinbridge and across Co. Carlow.
