What to Expect

Roughly once a month, usually the last Sunday, the Credit Union car park off Market Square in Castlebar fills with sellers laying out car boots and trailers of second-hand goods, bargains and bric-a-brac. It is run by the Snugboro Development Association as a service for the local community, with proceeds supporting Castlebar Scouts, Snugboro Football Club and local parent associations rather than any commercial operator. Seller rates are set out precisely on the organisers’ own website: a saloon car, estate or SUV selling from one drive-in space costs 10 euro, or 20 euro across two spaces, with vans priced from 20 euro (caddy-sized, selling from the back doors) up to 40 euro for hi-roof vans taking four parking spaces. Trailers are charged 20 or 30 euro depending on wheel configuration, though trailers are not permitted during the summer months. Long wheelbase vans, box vans, motor homes and second-hand tool vans selling petrol-powered equipment are restricted, rules put in place to keep the layout manageable and safe for browsers moving between pitches. Entry for buyers is free, and browsing runs from 8am to 3pm, with the earliest hour typically the best for finding anything genuinely sought-after before it sells.

Getting There

The car park entrance is from Market Square in central Castlebar, a short walk from the town’s other main car parks and shopping streets. Castlebar is served by Bus Éireann routes and by rail on the Dublin-Westport/Ballina line.
