At Castlerea · Castlerea, Co. Roscommon
The August Bank Holiday weekend in Castlerea has a long-standing claim on it: the annual Agricultural Show at Castlerea Mart. It draws people from across Co. Roscommon and beyond - farmers showing their best livestock, families looking for a proper day out, and anyone with a soft spot for the traditions of rural Ireland. Gates open at 10:00am, with the formal judging getting underway at noon.
The show is run by the Castlerea Agricultural Society and carries the full name “Castlerea Agricultural Trade & Craft Show,” which gives you a sense of how broad the day is. On the livestock side, there are competitions for cattle (pedigree and commercial), sheep, horses, ponies, Irish Draught, donkeys, dogs, goats, fowl, and pets. Ring judging for livestock and dogs begins at 12:30pm, with specialty competitions following at 2:30pm.
Away from the rings, there are sections for home produce, flowers, horticulture, arts and crafts, and photography. A vintage machinery display, trade stands, and craft vendors fill out the grounds. Live music, wild birds of prey displays, and the Castlerea Brass and Reed Band have all featured as entertainment in recent years.
For families with children, there are usually novelty competitions - “Bonny Baby” and “Best Dressed” contests are recurring favourites - alongside the general buzz of a busy show field. Food stalls and refreshments are available on the day.
Castlerea sits on the N60 in west Roscommon, roughly 25km west of Roscommon town. Bus Eireann connects it to Roscommon town and Athlone, and the town has a rail station on the Westport-Dublin line - handy if you are coming from Dublin or the west. The show is at Castlerea Mart, well signposted within the town, with parking on the showgrounds.
The town itself is a quiet, workable base for exploring this part of the county - Castlerea House (birthplace of Oscar Wilde’s father, Sir William Wilde) is nearby, and the surrounding Roscommon countryside rewards a slow drive. There is more to see in Castlerea and across Co. Roscommon.
