A free community summer festival in Castletown village, run by local people for local people - and open to anyone who happens to be passing through Co. Tipperary on a Friday evening in late July. The Castletown Community has pulled together to put on a evening of entertainment, family activities and communal craic in a part of Tipperary that rarely makes the tourist headlines. That is part of the appeal.
The festival takes the shape of a classic Irish village gathering - the kind where you will find a bit of everything happening at once. Community organisations including the GAA club, Tidy Towns, and local parent associations typically pool resources for events like this, running stalls, games and activities alongside entertainment on a central stage or green. Expect food and drink vendors, activities pitched at children of all ages, and the easy-going atmosphere that comes from a community that is simply glad to be out together. Castletown sits in the Owney and Arra area of north Co. Tipperary, roughly 8 miles west-northwest of Nenagh. From Limerick it is around 40 minutes by road; from Dublin roughly two hours. Tipperary town itself is served by train on the Waterford - Limerick line, though note that Sunday services are limited. Free parking is available in the village.
The area around Castletown is quiet, green Tipperary countryside - the kind that rewards a slow drive.
