Cobh People's Regatta 2026

At Cobh Waterfront and Town · Cobh, Co. Cork

Families watching sailing at Cobh People's Regatta Cork

One of the oldest regattas in Ireland takes over Cobh’s waterfront for three days every mid-August. The People’s Regatta is organised by Cove Sailing Club - a club that has been sailing Cork Harbour since 1919 - and it manages the rare trick of being a serious racing event and a thoroughly relaxed family day out at the same time. The racing draws dinghies and cruisers from clubs across the harbour, with competition in the historic Cork Harbour One Design class at its core. On shore, the craic is entirely free and runs from midday, so there’s no commitment beyond turning up.

What to expect

The water side of the weekend is all Cork Harbour racing: dinghy fleets and cruisers tacking and gybing between the marks while spectators watch from the quays and the seafront. The town side is a proper community festival. Highlights for families include a fancy dress parade, bouncy castles, face painting, and clown entertainment. A busking competition tends to draw a crowd of its own. Live music spills out of pubs and onto outdoor stages through the afternoon and into the evening, with the waterfront becoming a natural gathering point as the day goes on. Most outdoor events and family activities are free. Some evening music events are ticketed - worth checking the Cove Sailing Club website before you go if you’re planning on those.

The atmosphere is neighbourly rather than commercial. Cobh is a compact town and the regatta spreads through it naturally: the water, the seafront road, and the pubs all feed into each other, so you are never far from something happening.

Getting there

Cobh sits on Great Island in Cork Harbour, about 23 km east of Cork City. The easiest way in from Cork is Irish Rail - the Cork to Cobh line runs regularly and drops you right in the town centre, a short walk from the waterfront. Journey time from Cork Kent station is around 25 minutes. By road, the N25 east from Cork City brings you to the Cobh turnoff; the drive is straightforward but parking in the town centre during festival weekend fills up quickly, so the train is the better call if you are coming with children.

While you’re in Cobh

Cobh is one of the most distinctive towns in Munster - the coloured terraced houses stacked up the hillside, the cathedral looming above them, the harbour stretching out below. The Titanic Connection Centre and the Cobh Heritage Centre are both on the waterfront and worth an hour if the kids are old enough. There is more to see in Cobh and across Co. Cork.
