At Turner's Cross Stadium · Turner's Cross, Cork
Cork City FC returned to the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division for 2026 after a single season back in the Premier Division, and they came back with intent. Under Barry Robson, City have been among the pace-setters all season, and a Friday evening home fixture at Turner’s Cross against Longford Town - who are sitting mid-table - is the kind of game that draws a committed local crowd out on a summer night. If you want to see League of Ireland football in a proper purpose-built ground with a real atmosphere, this is a sound choice.
Turner’s Cross is an all-seated, fully covered 7,485-capacity stadium - the first ground in Ireland to achieve that standard following a major redevelopment completed in 2009. The four stands wrap tightly around the pitch, which keeps the noise in. The St Anne’s Park End holds 2,800 and tends to be where the atmosphere builds, with flags, drums and chanting a regular feature on home matchdays.
Cork have been one of the form sides in the First Division in 2026, with a front line built around Seani Maguire, Ruairí Keating and Hans Mpongo. Longford Town are a well-established First Division club from the Midlands, competing from their Bishopsgate ground with a young squad averaging 22 years of age. Expect competitive football with both sides having something to play for at this stage of the season. Kick-off is 7:45pm, so the summer light will last well into the match.
Turner’s Cross is in the south of Cork city, roughly 1.5 km from the city centre and walkable in about 20 minutes. City buses serve the area from Parnell Place Bus Station. If you are driving from outside Cork, the city is on the M8 from Dublin (roughly 2.5 hours), the N22 from Kerry, and the N25 from Waterford. Street parking is available in the residential roads around the ground, though matchday spaces fill up. The Cork city park-and-ride options on the outskirts of the city are worth considering if you are travelling in by car from a distance.
Cork city has a good run of bars, restaurants and food markets worth exploring before an evening kick-off - the English Market is a short walk from the city centre bus stops and makes an easy stop for an early dinner. There is more to see in Cork and across Co. Cork.
