Horses jumping at Cork Racecourse, Mallow

A Friday afternoon at the races in Mallow is one of those pleasures that suits just about every mood - proper sport, fresh air, a drink in hand, and the particular thrill of watching horses clear fences at pace. This is a National Hunt (jumps) meeting at Cork Racecourse, a track with a long history and a reputation as one of the best jumping venues in Munster. Whether you follow the form closely or just fancy a day out, the racecourse delivers. Children under 14 get in free, which makes this the kind of outing families can actually afford.

What to expect

Cork Racecourse runs a right-handed, galloping circuit of roughly 1.5 miles, with separate loops for flat and National Hunt racing. The jumps course gives horses room to build pace, and the fences demand proper jumping - it tends to suit bold, athletic chasers and hurdlers. The course is set on the banks of the River Blackwater, and on a clear July afternoon the surroundings are genuinely attractive.

The July 10 card is a summer jumps fixture. National Hunt racing in the summer months in Ireland carries good prize money and often attracts young horses being schooled over obstacles for the first time alongside seasoned handicappers. The atmosphere is typically relaxed compared to a big festival day - smaller crowds, shorter queues at the bar, easier to get a decent view of the parade ring. Gates open roughly 90 minutes before the first race, which is scheduled for 2:00pm.

The course is well known in Irish racing circles for the Grade 2 Hilly Way Chase - won in the past by horses like Douvan and Beef or Salmon - and for the Cork Grand National Handicap Chase. Those prestige races run later in the season, but the track and facilities are the same year-round.

Getting there

Cork Racecourse sits on the Killarney Road on the edge of Mallow town, directly off the N20 Cork to Limerick road, about 35km north of Cork city. By car from Cork city the drive takes around 30 to 35 minutes; from Limerick, allow roughly an hour. There is onsite parking at the venue.

By train, Mallow is well served from both Cork and Limerick on the Dublin Heuston mainline - journey time from Cork Kent is around 25 minutes. A free shuttle bus runs from Mallow train station to the racecourse on race days, so the train option is genuinely practical and saves the parking hassle.

While you’re in Mallow

Mallow is a decent-sized Cork market town with good pubs and places to eat, and the River Blackwater walk is worth a stretch before or after racing. There is more to see in Mallow and across Co. Cork.
